Flash Fiction ~ Romance Writers Weekly

Hello everyone and welcome! I can’t believe it’s May! When did that happen? I feel like this year is flying by and I haven’t really done anything yet. My son has just gone back to school, but summer break is almost here. Hopefully next year for him will be a little bit more normal… While I’ve tried to get some writing done, it’s been hard. I’ve done some writing contests and this blog but that is about it. So I’m really hoping for some inspiration to hit so I can continue to write.

If you missed what the incredible Leslie Hachtel had to say go on and pop back.

Today I’m the instigator for the blog and I ask my fellow authors to write a flash fiction – Write about someone who unexpectedly comes into $20,000 and include the detail: a small black notebook.

Technically speaking, I hadn’t stolen the car. I’d borrowed it.

A red Ferrari. Expensive.

But it was worth it to escape the prison I was stuck in. I had forty-five seconds before they caught up to me. The machine roared to life as I pressed the gas peddle and shifted into gear. Soon I was a blur of red, weaving through a sea of average cars.

My watch beeped. Time was up. They were coming. Excitement rather than fear sang in my veins. I pushed the car faster.

I’d always wanted to drive a fancy car and now was my chance. I just couldn’t get caught. Ever since I was old enough to appreciate cars, I’d kept a list of the ones I wanted to drive in a little black notebook. This was my number three. A Lamborghini my number one, but what are you going to do. When life gives you a chance to drive something beautiful, you take it.

My heart pounds against my chest as movement catches my eye in the rearview mirror. I shift gears and head towards the mountains, knowing I can navigate them like no one else.

The fog creeps along the tips of the mountains like someone’s fingers along a spine and even I can’t see the road ahead of me. Every few minutes a pocket in the clouds will open and the sun will shine on the curve before I take it.

I round the next corner, downshift and slam on my breaks. Seven black SUV’s stand in my path. How did they find me? I thought I was the only one who could wind through the mountains without a map.

My head hung in defeat. I’d lost. Now I would have to go back and spend my life a slave of their biddings. I stepped out of the car, lovingly sliding my hand along the smooth red body.

A flash blinded me and I was on the ground covering my eyes. When the spots disappeared a woman stood in front of me. Tall, athletic, curly dark brown hair and the most amazing blue eyes I’d ever seen. They were the blue, green of the ocean in the Caribbean.

We stood staring at each other for what seemed like hours, but in reality mere minutes. I stepped forward.

“Will you help me?” she whispered.

“Yes.” The answer fell from my lips without a second thought. I held out my hand and she took it and we walked into the cavernous mountains.

It was supposed to be a simulation. Not real. I glance down at the envelope in my lap. My fingers touch the crisp bills. $20,000.

Why would she give me that much money? However, I would trade it in to see her again. Maybe she was just a figment of my imagination, but the money wasn’t. I let the bills fall into my hands. The money was real. Now what would I do with it?

The simulator’s booming voice startled me out of my reverie. I stood on a flat road, the mountains looming in the distance. How did I get back down here and where did she go?

“You were the only one who got this far. We’ll give you one last chance. Are you ready to go again?”

“This time you won’t catch me.” I grinned and slipped into the car and shot off into the darkness, my freedom on the horizon.

That’s it for me today, continue on the hop to see the wonderful Brenda Margriet’s flash fiction. Until next time!
