Romance Writers Weekly ~ Fall Flash Fiction

Hello and welcome to the blog hop! Today we have a flash fiction. Let’s celebrate the equinox. Write a scene set in Autumn using the words Leaf, water, and coffee. Try to keep it to 500 words.

Here’s my flash fiction.

The resounding throb in her head echoed again as she rolled over and pulled the covers closer to her body. Emerson couldn’t face today. Not with him back in her life. She groaned as the rays from the sun slanted through the curtains, blinding her and made the pain behind her temples even worse than before. She needed coffee.

Her phone chirped and Emerson dragged her hand from underneath the blanket and glared at the screen.

“What do you want?” she grumbled.

“Someone is in a mood today,” stated Eric, her coworker and best friend. “You can’t stay in bed forever.”

“I can, watch me. I just can’t be around him.”

“Oh honey, I’m sure it won’t be as bad as it seems.”

Emerson sat up and tugged at her ponytail. “Eric, he left me alone in another country without even saying goodbye. I haven’t seen him in ten years and all of a sudden he shows up to my workplace as the new owner! How can I work there from now on?”

“You listen to me, Emerson Mitchell. You’re a strong, confident woman, the boss of all us average joe’s. You know how to run this company. Do not let a man from the past ruin it for you. Get dressed. I’ll meet  you downstairs in fifteen minutes.”

“Fine!” but I need coffee. The good kind from Bean House, the largest they have.”

“You got it. See you soon.”

Twenty minutes later hand wrapped around her extra large pumpkin latte, Emerson walked along the street with Eric. A red and orange leaf danced in circles around her before joining the others falling from the trees lining the park.

She drew in a deep breath, then another. The crisp scent of fall lingered in the air. She could do this. Emerson squared her shoulders and pulled the door open to Bailey Co. Books.

“We’re all here for you boss. No one is going to let you go without a fight.”

“Thanks, Eric.” she squeezed his hand.

They walked into the elevator and she jabbed the number 8. As the door closed a hand reached in to stop it.

There he was. Ryler Knight. Man who destroyed her life and never apologised. She drew in a sharp breath as he stood next to her, the elevator moving up. Sandalwood and musk surrounded her and she suppressed a groan.

Eric squeezed her hand and gave her a sharp nod.

Emerson took another sip of her coffee before turning her back to  Ryler and asking Eric. “How are the sales looking for our newest book?”

“With your newly implemented marketing ideas this book will be one of our best sellers.”

“Excuse me,” interrupted a deep baritone voice.

Emerson ignored him and continued talking with Eric. “That’s great. I’ll look forward to seeing the final report on my desk later this afternoon.”

“You got it, boss.” replied Eric with enthusiasm.

The elevator dinged, she walked past Ryler and toward her office.

“Emerson, wait.” Ryler called out.

She narrowed her eyes. “It’s Ms. Mitchell thank you very much.”

“I would like to talk to you please.”

“I need to get to work.”

“I…I’ll see you at the office meeting.”

Emerson nodded, walked into her office and shut the door. She released a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding.

After wearing down her carpet from pacing, she shook her head. Why should she have to hide? No! Emerson grabbed her water and stomped into the temporary office where Ryler set up.

“How dare you show your face here!” she growled.

“Please Emerson, let me explain.” replied Ryler.

“I told you, it’s Ms. Mitchell here. You lost all right to call me Emerson when you abandoned me in Italy.”

“I know. I’m sorry. Can I take you to lunch? I’ll explain everything.”
