Romance Writers Weekly ~ The Setting Makes the Story

Hello and welcome to our blog hop! I’m surprised to get this blog in as I’m solo parenting for the next two weeks. My husband went to Ecuador for his 40th birthday along with two other friends! So far things have gone somewhat smoothly… we’ll see how I look at the end.

Today we are asked: The setting of a romance novel can be vital to the story. Where do you set your books and why?

I love writing Regency romance. I tend to set my novels/stories around 1815. I just love everything about this era. I’ve written some contemporary romances as well, but regency has always stuck with me. I enjoy reading about knights and castles but I’ve never tried to write that time period yet.

I only write fiction. I did write one non-fiction, but it was a short 100 word micro flash fiction. It was very interesting and I’m not sure I could write a whole non-fiction novel.

The first novel I wrote was set in St. John’s Newfoundland. The woman traveled from England to St. John’s. I think it was because I’d never lived anywhere else besides California and it was a complete shock to my system. A lot of what the main character felt, I felt at one point or another from living there. I want to write in places that I’ve never been which means a lot of research but I enjoy that part!

Right now I’m taking an online writing course and part of it was just to write down story titles. My eight year old son gave me some great ones! After that we were supposed to write down 2-3 sentences about that story. The next part was to write for 20 min whatever came to our head and put it down on paper. I have a good couple of story ideas! They might not be novels but definitely short stories. It was an interesting way of getting the creative juices flowing so I might have to try that for my next novel.

That’s it for me today, now continue on the hop to see where the incredible Brenda Margriet likes to set her novels. Until next time!
