Romance Writers Weekly ~ Secondary Characters

Welcome to this week’s blog hop! I spent a wonderful weekend going up to Sonoma with my parents, sister and aunt who I haven’t seen in a long while. We spend the day walking around the square, drinking wine and searching for items for her wedding this coming June. It was a beautiful day and so nice to be around family.

If you missed what the incredible Jill Haymaker had to say, just click and pop back.

Today we talk about secondary characters. The secondary characters (friends, family, colleagues, etc) in a romance novel can greatly influence the story. Describe a secondary character you’ve written that you can’t forget.

The first full length romance novel that I wrote had a secondary character who I loved. Unfortunately I killed her off, but it was necessary for the story to move forward. She’s not in very many chapters, but she features prominently throughout the book.

She was the ‘good girl’ to the main characters feisty attitude. The main character was supposed to go along as the lady’s maid but when her cousin dies, she takes her place.

I started to write a book about the secondary character but I know I can’t change her death, so how will it be a happy ending? I’ll need to think on that one. A romance can’t be a romance when the main character dies.

This secondary character has a strong place and I enjoyed writing her more than other characters. I would love to figure out her story.

That’s it for me today, now continue on the hop to see what Leslie Hachtel has to say about her secondary characters. Until next time!

Don’t forget to check out Leslie’s book Murder Most Notorious

A beautiful homicide detective and a sexy cold case guy have to team up to find a vicious axe-wielding killer. Brutal murders have shocked the city and all the evidence points to a twin sister once thought dead. So many twists and turns in this action packed romantic thriller you might get dizzy. And so much passion.
