Romance Writers Weekly – Location, Location, Location

Hello everybody! It’s been so long, I think I’ve forgotten how to write… No not really, but it feels that way. I hope I have more of a chance to write or edit this week, but with adding two morning practices to coaching we will see how it goes.

We have a blog hop going on each week. All of us authors get asked a question and we respond, hopping from one person to the next. If you missed what Dani Jace had to say just click and pop back. Today the amazing Carrie Elks asks us: How do you choose the location for you books? Do you pick somewhere you’ve already been, or do you research creatively, using Google and other methods to find the perfect spot?

What a great question Carrie! When I first started reading romance books they were all set in England. That always sort of stuck with me. So when I began writing I set mine in England. But I also really loved where I was living. It was St. John’s, Newfoundland. So I decided that my book would have both settings.

I had just moved to St. John’s and the place, the people and the setting really stuck with me. I still researched a lot because I didn’t know too much about St. John’s history. I also had a chance to visit London during my writing process so I found that extremely inspiring! I was able to put both of those locations into my book.

Now I only have my debut book, but I have many other ideas in my head. I think for me I need to at least visit the place once. That way I can really immerse myself into the history of my surroundings. I could write another book and have the setting in London, San Francisco, St. John’s, Hawaii or Italy.

Ohh I can see it now, a romantic love story in Italy!

Sometimes the location chooses me and other times I choose it with careful research.

Thank you for getting me blogging this week Carrie. That’s it for me today! How does the wonderful Victoria Barbour find the locations for her books? Continue on the hop, until next time!

  1. How could the story not be romantic if set in Italy? Go for it, Jenna!
