Hello and welcome to the blog hop! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I’m in the process of cleaning things out of my garage and closets, so that’s taking a while. This week I’m going to try and get back into the writing groove, starting with this blog post! If you missed what talented Brenda Margriet had to say, just click and pop back.
This week the amazing Dani Jace asks us to: Write flash fiction 500 words or less using dog, fire & rain.
Amber woke to her dog barking, howling more like it. “Fudge quit it! It’s the middle of the night, people are trying to sleep.”
He stopped for a moment, then whined and began to bark again.
Amber grumbled and sat up in bed. Why did Fudge decide the middle of the night was the time to be loud? He never acted out during the day. She walked toward the door, stumbling into her dresser. A picture frame fell to the floor and her foot bloomed in pain. Damn that hurt! Amber turned on the light.
She reached to pick up the photo and her breath caught. Gabriel smiled back at her, well he was grinning at her in the picture. It had been taken on the Steps of Rome when they’d traveled the world together. But now she was alone. He had left her to prove himself worthy. Whatever that meant. Amber hadn’t seen him in a year.
Sighing, she placed the photograph back on the dresser. Amber never understood his need to leave. She’d loved Gabriel since she first saw him. From his dark mahogany brown eyes and chocolate coloured hair to his broad shoulders, and those soft kissable lips.
Fudge’s incessant barking brought her out of her deep memories. She walked into the hallway and stopped. Smoke fumes permeated the air. Amber’s heart thudded in her chest as she crept closer to the railing. Her downstairs was engulfed in fire. The red and yellow flames licked the stairs, there was no escape. How did it start? Panic set in as she ran into the other bedroom and found Fudge shaking by the door.
“It’s okay, Fudge.” She rubbed her hand back and forth across his back in attempt to soothe him.
He whined and licked her face.
Amber brushed her hair away from her eyes. “We have to find a way out of here before the fire reaches upstairs. Come on boy.”
She raced down the hallway with Fudge by her side and into her bedroom. Her bathroom window opened onto her roof. If Amber were able to climb onto it, she might be able to drop Fudge to safety and follow him.
Climbing on top of the toilet seat, Amber kicked the screen out of the window. It was just big enough for them to fit through. “Fudge, come here.”
Fudge’s tail thumped against her as she picked him up. Amber’s muscles shook as she gently put him on the flat part of the roof outside. She put one foot out the window and lifted her body pushed her way through. The air smelled of smoke and clouds rumbled in the distance. Amber hoped the much needed rain would soon follow.
The ground was a good ten feet down. How would they get there? Suddenly there was a shudder beneath her and two silver prongs of a ladder appeared. Amber sighed in relief. Someone had found her.
A masculine voice shouted from below. “Lift Fudge over and I’ll catch him. Then climb down. Don’t worry I won’t let anything happen to you.
The deep timber struck Amber to the core, she knew that voice. It was him. Gabriel had come for her. Lifting Fudge carefully over the edge she dropped him into the expecting arms. Then she lifted her foot over the roof and onto the ladder. Slowly rung over rung, she climbed down.
A pair of strong arms caught her and hugged her tight.
The scent of musk and earthiness surrounded her. Amber glanced up and met Gabriel’s mahogany eyes.
“You came back,” she whispered.
“I’ll never leave you again,” he said and kissed her with unrelenting passion.
Well that’s it for me. I hope you enjoyed the flash fiction! Now I challenge you to write your own. Sometimes just 500 words will unblock all the creativity flowing in you.
Continue on the hop and read the incredible J.J. Devine’s flash fiction. Until next time!
