Romance Writers Weekly – Book Covers

I’m so glad I have time to write this week! I couldn’t believe how busy last week was. I didn’t have one opportunity to write. Hopefully it will be much better starting tomorrow even though I begin my coaching job. Eeek! Anyway onto blogging. 🙂

We have a blog hop going on each week. All of us authors get asked a question and we respond, hopping from one person to the next. If you missed what J.J. Devine had to say just click and pop back. Today I ask our group about book covers: What do you like to see on Romance book covers? Both characters, one character, shirts off, fully clothed, faces, silhouettes? What turns you off from choosing one?

The very first romance book I picked out was The Rose and the Shield by Sara Bennett. I loved this book and all the others she has written. I was drawn to this book because I love roses and there is a rose on the cover. And I liked the way the woman looked on the cover. (The man isn’t too shabby either.) I really really like the romance books with the silhouette or just the backs of the heroine. I have an idea for the cover of my first novel and I think it’s going to be just the back of a lady. Perhaps a little like this one, but with my character. Something seems very romantic about this. And it brings up the question of what is her story? Why so mysterious? Singlelady

Well I won’t knock a good ol’ fashioned romance cover with the bare chested hero and half undressed heroine. Some of them are just so classic! The tilted head, leaning against the handsome man and looking on in passion/ecstasy. the-tattooed-dukecaptinback

After surfing the web a little bit and looking in book stores, I’ve decided I’m not much of a fan of almost all naked. Not that I’m a prude or anything, but somehow it just turns me off and I won’t even pick up the book to look at it. Is that bad? It doesn’t leave anything to the imagination. You know you are going to get this all naked man on the cover and that is what he is going to look like.  Mancover

The ones that show all of the dress are pretty neat too. Wouldn’t it be fun to wear a dress this amazing? Hey you can dream right?

All in all, I like most romance novel covers. I find the ones with a man and woman my favourite with the single lady on the cover my second favourite. I do find it mysterious when they don’t show either of their faces. So many wonderful choices! I can’t wait to figure out the perfect cover for my novel. That’s it for me today! I wonder what everyone else likes? Now continue on the hop and see what Marc Stevens has to say about his favourite covers. Until next time!

  1. I love the historical covers with the big, beautiful dresses. And I agree with you on nakedness – partly undressed is way sexier!

  2. I love the dresses too. I don’t mind naked, but it’s a bit odd that after all these years of women trying not to be objectified they like a naked man on the cover. Seem wrong. No?

  3. I don’t recall seeing a lot of covers with the back of the heroine. I’m going to have to look for that going forward. The picture above is very intriguing.
