Hello everyone and welcome to this week’s blog hop! I was out last week because I was in a short story writing contest. Wooo this one was fun! They gave me five choices for a character and I had to choose one: a reformed criminal, someone in an arranged marriage or soon to be arranged marriage, a faun, a mortician, a babysitter or nanny. Then they gave me five choices for a setting and I had to choose one: Valentine’s Day anywhere, a cabin in the woods, a bowling alley, Venice, Italy, or a hospital. The one thing that needed to be included was broken eyeglasses.
I chose a mortician for my character and Venice, Italy for my setting. I wrote a story about a mortician who could bring people back to life if they had a special mark. Along the way he meets a young boy who doesn’t have the mark, but he wants to save him anyway. If anyone wants to read my short story Second Life click HERE!
Today’s hop we talk about scent. Scent is important. What is your favorite and does it help in your work?
I enjoy musky scents like tobacco or whiskey and vanilla. I think those scents help get me into the mood of writing brooding gentlemen. Lemon, bright citrusy, pumpkin spice and coffee help me with writing bold heroines.
Scents can help you relax, they can bring you to a place far, far away where you’ve only dreamed of traveling. When another author describes the men’s drawing room, the spring flowers, or a barn filled with horses, I can see and smell those scents in the story.
So many memories or ideas can be brought about by scent. It’s so very important to get smells into your stories so the reader can be transported to a different place.
