Romance Writers Weekly ~ Spooky Flash Fiction

Happy Halloween week! I searched Halloween love and this was one of many pictures that popped up. Oh my gosh, I love it! It has Halloween vibes all over it. I love this time of year. Halloween is one of my favourite holidays. You get to dress up, be something else and have a whole bunch of fun. We used to have a friend that threw an amazing Halloween party, she had the food, the decor, all the witchy things. However, they’ve since moved away and I think it would be fun to throw a party.

I just came back from New York City, and it was AMAZING!!! I had such an incredible time. It was my 40th birthday present from my family. I went with my mom and my sister and we walked everywhere! We stayed in the theatre district, super close to Times Square and Central Park. The first day we did Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the 911 Memorial. It was a lot, but I loved all the history. We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and all through Greenwich. We saw Back to the Future on Broadway and if you get a chance to see it, GO! It was so awesome. Many other adventures happened, but it would take up this whole blog, so I digress.

Today we are going to write a piece of flash fiction including the words ghost, witch, and spooky!

The air grew crisp and cold as she trudged through the park. Bright colors of gold, brown and red burst forth in front of her as a child jumped into a pile of leaves. The weather so warm a few days prior had now dipped into much cooler temperatures. Esme burrowed deeper into fur lined coat and continued her trek to work.

Smiling, Esme glanced at the ghosts and witches decorating the porches around her. With Halloween in two days the neighborhoods had come alive with frightful haunts. Esme loved this season, fall was her favourite. With this weather you could wear pants and a t-shirt or a sweatshirt. It was the best kind of weather.

Esme couldn’t wait for the halloween party tonight. It was event she looked forward to every year. Each year she tried to think outside the box for an interesting costume. This year she was going to be Babe-raham Lincoln. She had high heels, fishnets, a corset, a fake beard and Lincoln’s top hat. It was going to be amazing.

A huge gust of wind came up and scattered dirt in her eyes. Esme blindly searched for a tissue in her purse when she banged into something hard.

“Ouch!” she shouted as she stumbled to the ground.

“You need to be more careful, you almost knocked me into the lake!” a deep baritone rang out.

Esme wiped her eyes clear of the dust and stared into blue eyes so dark, it was like drowning in the ocean. “I didn’t mean to bump into you.”

He glared at her and stomped off in the opposite direction. Esme stood and shook her head. What a rude man! After settling down in her office, she grabbed a cup of coffee, sat behind her desk and began inputing numbers.

“Do you want to grab some lunch?” A dark curly head poked around the corner.

Esme glanced up and smiled. “Hi Viv, I’m famished. Let’s go.”

“So are you ready for tonight?” asked Viv as they sat at a table with candles aglow around them. It was their favorite pop up restaurant. It came each year with a different theme. This year it was called Spooky Vibes and consisted of drinks and appetizers.

Esme nodded, “I’ve got everything all laid out, I’m going for the win this year.”

“Good you could use some fun. You’ve been such a bore lately,” stated Viv.

“I have not,” pouted Esme.

Viv took a sip of her fancy coffee and replied, “ever since you got dumped by he who shall not be named, you’ve been off. You don’t want to go out or do anything. I know he hurt you Esme, but it’s time to get back out there, meet someone new.”

“I think I’m done with men for a while.” Her thoughts strayed back to the man in the park with the dark sapphire eyes.

“I hope you meet one tonight. Wouldn’t that be the best! You love halloween and anyone coming tonight must love to dress up. It’s perfect,” said Viv.

“We’ll see about that.”

A few hours later Esme glanced at herself in the mirror. She added a dot of makeup for Lincoln’s mole, then put on the top hat, perfection. Heart thumping against her chest, she ordered a cab, wrapped a coat around her and went outside to wait.

Music blasted from every window as she walked up to the house. The boom, boom, thump reverberated through her. Esme searched for Viv but couldn’t find her through the mass of people.

Suddenly Esme was pushed from behind and ran into a rock hard wall. Except that it wasn’t a wall. It was a man. She glanced him up and down, then her mouth dropped open. Those eyes. Deep and dark and blue.

“You seem to have a knack for ramming into me,” he stated in his deep voice.

“I didn’t mean to,” she choked out. “I was pushed.”

“I can see I’m not the only one going as a dead president. Yours is an interesting twist I must say.”

Esme stood taller, “I’m Babe-raham Lincoln. And I’m going to win this contest.”

He laughed and it sent shivers down her spine. A tingling formed low in her belly.

“Why are you laughing?” she asked.

“Oh you’re not going to win. I’m Benjamin- Spanklin’, and I’ve got this contest in my hand.”

“What do you mean you’re Benjamin- Spanklin’?”

He held up a paddle and gestured down to his legs where he was clad only in a gold bathing suit bottom, white socks and old style shoes. He wore a gray wig and a fancy top coat.

Suddenly she burst out laughing. “We’d do better to enter the couples contest. That prize money would be ours!”

“Why not?” he replied with a twinkle in his eyes. “Babe-raham Lincoln and Benjamin Spaklin’ will rock this party.

He held out his hand and Esme took it, knowing this night would be one she would never forget.
