Romance Writers Weekly ~ Secondary Characters

Hello, I’m so glad you’ve joined me today! Now that Halloween is over, we can prep for Thanksgiving. I’m not one of those that can put out all my Christmas things yet. I know a lot of people love to put all their decorations up on November first, but I have fall decorations up that I like to enjoy. Although I do like to watch the Hallmark Christmas movies even though my husband makes fun of me.

If you missed what the wonderful Leslie Hachtel had to say, just click and pop back.

Today we are going to talk about the supporting characters in one of your stories. What inspired their name, personality, characteristics, etc

My favourite supporting character is a woman named Alanna. She is the heroine’s cousin and unfortunately she does not make it. I loved writing about her. I knew from the first moment I started writing this book that she was going to die. It might have even been one of the first scenes that I wrote.

I love the name Alanna and I got it from my all-time favourite series The Song of the Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce. The heroine is a strong, independent woman who disguises herself as a boy to become a knight. I reread it at least once a year.

I put many great qualities into my character and made her my own with some twists. She’s not as feisty as the main character but she does stand up for herself and her family. She’s sent away to marry someone she doesn’t know and she takes her cousin along her with. Even though Alanna is in love with someone else back home, she knows her duty to her family. Alanna tries to tell the main character to put her stubbornness aside and help her family.

Alanna is calm, collected, independent and strong. I wanted to write a character that could get through to the heroine, and who better than a cousin and best friend. I’d love to write a story about her beginning, but I know it ends sadly. Maybe it will be a novella and it will be about the time she’s in London before she moves and how she tells her love to wait for her. I’m not sure of all the details, but it’s there in my head.

I really enjoyed writing Alanna and hopefully the next supporting characters I have will be just as good to write.

That’s it for me, now continue on the hop to see which character the incredible PG Forte wants to talk about. Until next time!
