Romance Writers Weekly – It’s Flash Fiction Time!

Hello and welcome to the blog hop! We have some new members joining our group, so hopefully we will hear from them in the next couple of weeks. If you missed what the incredible A.S. Fenichel wrote about, just click and pop back.

This week the amazing Brenda Margriet gives us a flash fiction:

I missed the last Flash Fiction week, so I decided to assign it again. Write no more than 500 words using these three words: grandmother, freckle, giant.

I lay on the grass staring up at the sky. The white wisps of lingering clouds float by. I should be inside, but how could I be inside on a day like this? Besides, if I leave then I won’t get to see him. He comes to me in my dreams, and oh what sweet dreams they are. He told me to meet him in the meadow today, that he had something to tell me.

“Scarlett! Where are you?” My grandmother’s voice calls out. “Silly girl, I know you’re out there. You can’t chase after someone you’ve never met!”

I should never have told her my dreams, now she thinks I’m crazy. I imagine I’m invisible. Maybe if I don’t move, she won’t come looking for me. Her tiny frame casts a thin shadow over me, but she doesn’t come any closer. Scrunching my eyes closed, I sink my body deeper into the tall grass. Soon enough my grandmother leaves, gone back to her tasks at our house.

A giant cloud passes by, covering the sun and goosebumps prickle up my arms. It won’t be long now, I’ll see him again soon. Once I know I am alone, I stand and walk farther into the grass towards the meadow. I can hear his voice reverberating inside my head. His deep tone promising many pleasures to come.

He is my escape and I cannot wait to be free. My life here isn’t terrible, but with him it will be an adventure. I swing my arms side to side and spin around in a circle with a laugh of glee. When I stop breathless and full of life, he’s standing there in front of me.

My heartbeat quickens as I gaze into his chocolate brown eyes. His sandy brown hair falls haphazardly onto his forehead and there is a sprinkling of freckles across his nose, so light I almost miss them. He’s even more handsome in front of me than in my dreams.

“Hello, Scarlett. I’ve been waiting for you.”

“Hi,” I whisper back, the word barely escaping my mouth. “What is your name and how is it that you know mine?”

“My name is Remy. We were born to be together, the fates have made it so. I’ve known your name since I was young.”

I tug on a stray curl, “What happens now?”

Remy smiles, and just like that my insides melt with some deep desire that I have yet to discover. Somehow I know we are meant to be together just as he proposes.

“Our life begins now.”

I gasp as his fingers interlace through mine.

Remy pulls a round object from his pocket, throws it in front of him and whispers strange words unknown to me. The landscape in front of me blurs and a portal opens up in front of us.

“Are you ready?” asked Remy.

My heartbeat echoes around us and I nod. Remy pulls me close and brings his lips to mine. A searing heat soars throughout my body. We walk hand in hand into the portal and disappear from this world.

Well that’s it for me today! I hope you enjoyed this flash fiction. I know I always have fun writing these. Now continue on the hop to see what the talented Brenda Margriet has written. Until next time!
