Romance Writers Weekly- Irish Folklore

Hello and welcome to the blog hop! I present this week’s question to my fellow authors. If you missed what the incredible A.S. Fenichel had to say, just click and pop back.

Today I ask: St. Patrick’s Day is coming up. Do you believe in any Irish folklore?

I always grew up with thinking/knowing there is a leprechaun and a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, that was about it. I’ve never really had a direct connection to Irish folklore until I moved to Newfoundland. They very much believe in fairies.

Some Newfoundland stories come from the Scottish and Irish when they settled in Newfoundland in the 1600’s. They believe that fairies are the “good people” or “little people,” even though they can cause trouble. The creatures come in all sizes and shapes of children and adults, glowing lights and even animals. Some Newfoundlanders have even claimed that they have heard fairy music, become entranced and lose their way in the woods; days later they will return home, not knowing what happened.

While living there, I never personally encountered a fairy or any such folklore, but I heard a lot of stories. When living in a small community you meet people and hear the stories they’ve learned from generations past. I loved hearing the tales from friends and their families. It was one of my favourite things about living in St. John’s.

I enjoy reading about other legends and stories from years gone by. I think that’s what attracts us writers. We learn about a folklore and can weave it into our story or we can make up our own. I’m always willing to learn more.

That’s it for me today, so continue on the hop to see what the wonderful Brenda Margriet has to say. Until next time!
