Romance Writers Weekly ~ Halloween Flash Fiction

Happy Halloween everyone! I hope that you get to celebrate wherever you are. I love Halloween, it is my top holiday. I get dressed up every year and it’s so much fun. We got to take a break from our kids and head up to my sister’s place for her Halloween party. It was a blast! The group costume we did was Seinfeld and it was hilarious! I was Elaine, my husband was Kramer, my sister was George and her boyfriend was Jerry.

If you missed what the wonderful Leslie Hachtel had to say, just click and pop back.

Today we get to write a Halloween themed 500 word flash fiction using the words pumpkin spice, ghost and costume.

The walk down the tree lined park was crisp and cool. The wind bit though her jacket and scarf as she headed towards town. Emorie inhaled the air around her. It smelled of pumpkin spice and fall. She enjoyed this season more than any other.

Emorie pulled her jacket closer around her and continued to walk. This week the weather had turned, and it was bitterly cold, colder than normal. She tilted her head down and burrowed into her scarf. All the sudden she slammed into something hard and warm.

“What, how? OUCH!” She snapped her head up and took in the man before her. No not a man, a god. Tall with deep brown eyes and golden hair. Muscles rippled as he held her in place. She was caught in his gaze and couldn’t escape. Emorie shivered and he pulled her closer.

Words burst forth before she could hold them back. “Why are you naked? Why did you run into me?”

“Excuse me? I didn’t run into you, your head was buried so far down, you didn’t watch where you were going,” replied the deep voice.

Emorie glanced at him and saw that he was indeed wearing clothes, just very little of them. No shirt and nude running shorts. Her cheeks flared with heat.

“I’m…I’m sorry, I thought,” she said.

“Can I continue my run now? Or should I warn all the other runners out there that there’s a crazy woman ramming into people?”

The deep voice reverberated through her. Anger flared within her and she pushed away from him.

“I didn’t mean to run into you. It’s cold out here in case you haven’t noticed.”

“I’m running, it’s not cold. Goodbye.”

Before Emorie could get another word in, he ran around her and continued down the path. What an irritable man! She huffed and continued her walk. After a few more miles, the outskirts of town came into view. Ghosts were hung from all the lampposts in town in preparation for Halloween.

A coffee would warm her right up, so Emorie headed towards Buzz Café. A warm blast of heat enveloped her as she stepped inside. She stepped up to the counter and ordered an extra hot coconut mocha. There was a chair before the fireplace, perfect for warming up. Emorie turned and ran smack into the same man from the trail. Hot liquid splashed onto her hand, and she yelped.

“Are you trying to kill me, woman?” he asked.

“You ran into me!” cried Emorie indignantly.

His expression softened as he glanced at her hand and rubbed his fingers over where the coffee splilt. “Is your hand okay?”

“It’s fine.” Tingles ran through her hand where he had touched her. She glared and stomped over to the seat before the fire. Pins and needles spread out over her fingers and toes as the feeling slowly came back into them. Emorie sighed and glanced out the window. Small children in costumes were walking around with their parents. She laughed at a particularly cute little girl dressed up as a cat.

“Is this seat taken?”

Emorie looked up and saw the god. Why was he still bugging her?

“What do you want?” she snapped.

“I just wanted to apologize for being rude. Can I join you?” His dark brown eyes gleamed in the firelight.”

Emorie’s heart raced in her chest and nodded.

“I’m Grayson,” he said with a beaming smile.

“Emorie,” she replied.

That’s it for me today. Now continue on the hop and read the incredible Brenda Margriet’s flash fiction. Until next time!
