Romance Writers Weekly ~ Hallmark Flash Fiction

Hi everyone, are you in the Christmas spirit yet? Or have you finished your Christmas shopping? I’m definitely in the spirit and I have just a teeny tiny bit of shopping left to do like the stocking stuffers. It’s been a tougher year for us since we’ve been tight on money, but I still think our kids will enjoy their presents.

Our topic for today is Hallmark movies and writing one, or part of one. I love watching these movies every season. My husband always makes fun of me because of the acting and predictablility, but I think each one is unique.

Hallmark movies are known for their delightful predictability. Can you write your own in 500 words or less?

I’ve been set up on blind dates before, but this one is the worst yet. He’s gone on and on about his job and how he thinks he’s the best at it. He hasn’t once asked me what I do or anything about me. I pull out my phone and text Rayna.

Me: “This guy is terrible! Why did you set me up with him?”

Rayna: “Why are you talking to me during your date? He was rated 9 out of 10”

Me: “I don’t see how this guy could be a 9. He’s a bore. He hasn’t once asked me about myself and not even noticed I’m on the phone with you. That’s not a good sign.”

Rayna: “Maybe next time he says something about himself, you can interject and say you like a similar thing.”

Me: “So I should just shout from the table I like numbers, even though I don’t?”

Rayna: “You like paint by numbers.”

Me: “Okay, this conversation and date are done now.”

I turn off my phone and bring my attention back to Simon. Although he does have that curly dark hair that falls over his brow that I love so much, he still hasn’t stopped talking. My eyes wander around the restaurant and I get caught in a cerulean blue storm.

My heart lurches into my throat. It can’t be. Why would he be here, in New York of all places? In the same restaurant as me? I haven’t seen Brenden since university where he decided to go abroad rather than stay with me. He left me and broke my heart

I turn my gaze away and try to catch what Simon is saying, but I take a sideways glance out of the corner my eye and between the holiday decorations and Christmas trees, he’s still staring daggers at me. Wait a minute, why would he be mad at me when he’s the one that left?

Suddenly I feel overwhelmingly tired. I need to get out of here. Away from this date and away from the past.

“Excuse me, Simon. I think this date is over, I’m leaving.”

He has the nerve to look startled, “why? I thought you were having a good time.”

“Hah!” I burst out. “How would you even know if I’m having a good time when all that has come out of my mouth is my name? You’ve talked all about yourself.”

“I thought you wanted to know about me,” he said.

“There’s getting to know you, and you talking non stop. Have a happy holiday, Simon.” I place forty dollars on the table for my drink and dinner gather my jacket and leave.

The wind plows into me as I leave. I pull my hood over my head and wrap my arms around myself as I walk home. I should have driven but getting in the car for three blocks seemed pointless.

I’m shivering and the cold has seeped into my bones when I hear a muffled shout behind me. I turn and watch as Brenden stomps towards me with a fire in his eyes that warms my body right up.

Brenden stops when he towers over me. I forgot how tall he was. I stand my ground, refusing to give in to him. “What do you want?” I grit out with chattering teeth.

“You never returned my emails, never responded to me, Isla” he spat out.

I pulled back in shock. “I never received any correspondence from you. You left me without a second thought, no care whatsoever.”

“That’s not true. I wrote you every week I was gone. I tried to explain.”

I shook my head and hugged my arms tighter to my body. “There’s nothing to explain. You made a choice and that’s fine, but you don’t get to walk back in here and pretend that everything is fine between us.”

Brenden reached for me and I stumbled back into the snow. “Don’t touch me. Please just leave me alone.”

“We need to talk, Isla,” he stated.

“No we don’t. Now please let me get home before I freeze to death.” I turned and walked away. It took all my willpower not to turn around and run into his arms. But I’d been there before and I wouldn’t go back. A tear slid down my cheek as I ran the rest of the way home.

After a long hot soak in the tub, some tears and cozy pjs, I made a hot chocolate and added a healthy pour of Bailey’s. A knock sounded at the door. I sniffled and turned the handle. Brenden stood in the doorway with a bouquet of flowers.

“Please let me talk to you.”

I hesitated with indecision, biting my bottom lip, I left the door open and walked back to my couch….

That’s it for me today, now continue on the hop to read the amazing Leslie Hachtel’s flash fiction. Until next time!
