Romance Writers Weekly ~ Flash Fiction Time

#lovechatwrite

Hello, hello, hello and welcome! I’ve been away from the hop for two weeks. My kids had their spring break and we flew to Maui to visit my husband’s parents. It was an amazing, relaxing time. We got to do a sunrise canoe paddle and a full moon canoe paddle, as well as whale watching, hiking and finding turtles. I always love our yearly trip to spend time with family and the ocean. I feel a deep connection to the water and it relaxes me.

On to the hop! Today we are asked to write a flash fiction with the words spring, boat and shadow.

I needed to make it to Count Deverall’s castle before the mist settled in. Now I’ll be forced to spend it out in the wilderness with the creatures that only roam in the night. From a young age, my father always told me never to linger in the dark. Terrible things happened to those who did. I was never told what these creatures looked like, only that your soul would be lost forever if you were captured by one.

I flick the stone against stone and a swirl of smoke curls around the leaves and twigs I’ve shoved together. The fire is a risky gamble but the cold is creeping into my bones. I won’t last until morning. The mist moves around me, circling me like I’m its prey. My breath catches in my throat and I strain my ears. Nothing but the crackling twigs surround me, not even an owl calls out.

Unease trickles along my spine. Something is out there. Dangerous as it is, I put out my fire and run through the trees. My skin becomes clammy with sweat and fear. Footsteps pound behind me and I will myself to go faster. The shadows swarm up from the depths o the ground and surround me. I can’t move everything is pitch black. I struggle to no avail.

“If you struggle, you will fail.” A terrible voice calls out.

My mind explodes in pain as I fight against the invisible bonds. How could I not want to escape? I need to free myself before I die. The voice calls out again.

“If you struggle, you will fail.”

As I war with fighting for my life and giving up, I take a shallow breath and give in. I let my body go slack. The bonds release me immediately and I gasp for breath as I fall to the mossy ground.

As soon as my feet hit the ground, I run again. The sound of water lapping against the shore catches my attention. I turn towards the water and through the gloom, stands a boat knocking into the sand.

I recall my father’s saying that my soul would be lost. Right now I would give my soul to be free of this. I jump into the boat and paddle away. I’m in the middle of the lake when the shadows surround me once again.

“You have a choice Filla,” a deep voice calls out. “You can come with me or forfeit your life.”

“Will I loose my soul if I come with you?” I reply.

“Yes, but you will be saved.”

I take a deep breath. “I will come with you.”

I hold out my hand. A warm strong powerful grip lifts me out of the boat and I’m surrounded by peace.

That’s it for me today, I hope you enjoyed my quick flash fiction. Now continue on the hop to read the incredible Leslie Hachtel’s flash fiction. Until next time!
