Romance Writers Weekly ~ Flash Fiction Time

Welcome to the blog hop everyone! I hope the week has treated you all well. The weather is a teeny bit cooler which is nice. I can spend much of my time outside. I’ve been trying to move back in all the furniture I took out from our floors going in. It’s taking a much longer time than I thought it would, but at least I can get rid of things that I don’t want.

Anyway, today we are asked to write a flash fiction of 500 words or less with the words: house, umbrella, and ice cream.

The dark gray storm clouds were swollen with rain, but droplets had yet to fall. With a warm jacket on and scarf wrapped around her neck, Brea left the house. Even with all her layers the wind buffeted around her and a chill crept into her skin.

She fumbled with her umbrella but it was a losing battle as the wind picked it up and tossed it into the air. A swirl of rainbow colours spun around and disappeared around the corner. This would be a squall they said, the worst of the weather yet to come. Brea didn’t know why she had the sudden urge to get out of her comfy apartment, but she went. Even her dog Rollo didn’t want to go outside, and he always loved the outdoors.

Brea rounded the corner and staggered back a few steps as the wind sliced through her. She slunk deeper into her coat and shivered yet again. Whatever had possessed her to come out seemed foolish now. There was not a soul in sight. Nobody in their right mind would be caught out during this miserable day. Lights blazed at the coffee shop at the end of the corner and Brea slogged her way towards it.

All of a sudden Brea caught sight of her umbrella. The sharp pointed end crashed into a man exiting the shop next door and he jumped back with a howl of pain. She rushed towards him.

“Are you okay?” she asked breathless.

“Of course I’m not okay, I just got stabbed!” growled the man.

“I hardly think an umbrella can cause you permanent damage. Let me help you,” she replied as she reached forward.

“I don’t need anything from you,” he said as he glared at her.

Brea’s breath caught in her throat as she stared into the most beautiful eyes she had ever seen. So dark brown, it was as though she were melting in chocolate. Pieces of blonde hair stuck out crazily from his toque.

“I…I’m sorry. I didn’t, I only wanted to help.”

“Maybe next time keep control of your things.”

Brea stiffened as anger bubbled forth. “Yes, because I always let go of my umbrella when it’s raining. If you will excuse me, I would like to get inside before the storm begins. Goodbye.”

She pushed past the man and walked into the warmth and glow of Big Beans. She found a seat next to the fire and rubbed her hands together. As her extremities warmed, Brea sat back with a sigh. A flash of light lit the windows and the skies opened up. Rain poured down in torrents so thick she couldn’t see the street.

For some reason even though she still shivered, Brea ordered a chocolate and coconut ice cream. She moaned as the delicious flavours slid down her throat.

“Why on earth are you eating ice cream on a day like this?” said a grouchy voice.

Brea glanced up to see the man she’d yelled at outside. Once again, she was caught up in his rugged handsomeness.

“I just needed some. Do you have a problem with my dessert choices as well?”

He lowered his brows in a frown and sat down beside her. “I came in to say I was sorry. I know you didn’t make your umbrella run into me on purpose. I’m Anthony and you are?”

Warmth flooded her cheeks and she held out her hand. “Brea.”

His large hand swallowed hers up and tingles ran up and down her arm.

“Nice to meet you Brea. How about I get us some hot coffees to warm us up.” His eyes twinkled with the promise of more ways to warm up than just coffee.

Brea’s lips tilted up into a smile and nodded.
