Hello everyone! I hope all is well. We had the perfect weather this past week. It was 70 degrees with a mix of clouds one day and sun the next. Cool enough to be comfortable and warm enough to wear a t-shirt. It’s the best type of weather.
I’ve kept busy by homeschooling my son and attempting to get some writing in here and there. It was my birthday last week and my husband planned for friends to come and drive by our house to say hi. It was really nice to see all the friends that could make it.
If you missed what the talented Brenda Margriet had to say, just click and pop back.
Today the amazing Leslie Hachtel asks us to: write a 500 word or less flash fiction using the words hair, herbs and heaven.
Here is mine, enjoy!
The smell of fresh brewed coffee permeated the air. Emerson brought the mug to her mouth, but before she could take a sip, the brown liquid splashed out of the cup and onto the counter.
The room around her began to shake and shudder. Emerson dropped her coffee and it shattered on the floor. She ran under the table and wrapped her arms around her legs as the shaking continued. The tangy metallic taste of fear swam in her mouth.
Emerson’s heart pounded so hard in her chest, she thought it would burst out of her rib cage. She hated earthquakes. When would the earth stop moving? Of course she was alone. Whenever bad things happened she was always alone.
All at once the trembling stopped. Emerson sniffed and crawled out from underneath the table. She shoved her hair away from her face and glanced around. The pots she kept her herbs in were shattered and dirt spread across the floor. Her house was a mess.
Emerson walked over to the TV and turned it on. Every news channel blared with information about the earthquake.
“We just had a six point five magnitude earthquake in Heaven county and the surrounding areas. Mass casualties have occurred, all we ask right now is that people stay calm and help will come to you as soon as possible.”
Even though it was over, Emerson’s heart still pounded. Would an aftershock happen? She needed to get out of the house. A shrill ringing broke the silence, and she went in search of her phone.
“He…hello?” she mumbled once she clicked answer.
“I’ve been trying to reach you since this started! Are you okay, Emerson?” a deep voice came through the speaker.
Tears slid down her cheeks. “I’ve been better. I just wish you were here, Rowan.”
“I know. If I could get to you I would, but all the roads are blocked. It will be another couple of hours before I can.”
Emerson opened the back door and stepped outside. The wails of sirens could be heard down the hill. “Of course I decide to live on a damn hill with only one way in and out. What if there is an aftershock?”
“It will be okay,” said Rowan. “You have enough open space outside that if one did occur you would be safe.”
“I’ll feel better when you get here,” sighed Emerson.
“Stay safe, I’ll see you soon.”
Emerson shoved her phone in her back pocket, took a deep steadying breath and walked toward her pool. It was the only thing that made her feel truly calm. She sat down on a lounge chair and closed her eyes. Dazzling colors splayed across her eyelids and she listened to the sounds of birds chirping as her heartbeat returned to normal.
That’s it for me! I hope you liked it. Now continue on the hop to read the incredible Leslie Hachtel’s flash fiction. Until next time!
