Romance Writers Weekly ~ Flash Fiction Meet Cute

Welcome to the blog hop! I hope everyone has had a great weekend. It’s been so warm here and it’s only February. I’m not ready for all this sun. It means it will be a super hot summer.

If you missed what the amazing Leslie Hachtel had to say, click and pop back.

This weeks challenge is a flash fiction:

Write a story about the worst Valentine’s Day ever but give it a happy ending.

This was supposed to be the most romantic day of the year. Hah! Valentine’s Day, what a joke. I never thought I’d be standing as the rain poured down around me in sheets watching my now ex-boyfriend drive away in my car. My car! But here I was. Damn him!

I don’t know why I ever fell in love with Drake Hammond. At first, I guess we loved each other. We had the new couple glow that everyone gets. Then suddenly, it disappeared. He became more hostile, and only wanted me to give into his needs. I lost myself. When I finally got the guts and told him we were over, he kicked me to the curb, literally.

Why did these things always happen to me? I turned and stomped down the street glaring into the coffee shops as I passed by. Couples sat cozied up together, their hands wrapped in each other’s or around a warm steaming cup of hot chocolate decorated with a fancy heart. This day couldn’t get any worse.

Brushing the hair out of my face, I turned the corner and smashed into a rock hard body. Hot coffee burned my hands and the front of my shirt.

“Aaaaahhh!” I screamed in frustration and pain.

“Are you okay?” asked a deep voice.

“Of course I’m not okay! I’m freezing from the rain, my clothes are ruined and my hands are burned.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t see you.”

Anger bubbled inside me, and I balled my fists by my side. “You should watch where you’re going. I’ve had a shit day and you’ve made it worse. Just leave me alone. All I want to do is get dry.”

“Please let me help you. I’ll buy you a coffee, anything.”

“I don’t need a coffee. I need to find a damn cab.” I glanced around the street. Only the one time I need a cab there are none in sight.

A strong hand reached out and grabbed my shoulders. For the first time, I glanced up at the man in front of me. A gasp escaped my lips. He was so tall I had to crane my neck. Locks of black hair fell into his sapphire blue eyes. The warmth from his hands seeped into me and I almost let myself melt into his embrace. Almost. I took a deep breath.

“Let me give you a ride,” he said.

“I don’t even know you,” I whispered.

His lips turned up into a grin. “My name is Darra, and you are?”

“I’m Rowan.” My heart skipped a beat.

“Now we know each other. Please let me take you someplace to get warm and dry.”

“There’s a great coffee shop on the edge of town. It has a roaring fireplace and the best cup of hot chocolate you could ever have,” I said.

“I’m pretty picky about my drinks,” he furrowed his brow.

“Trust me,” I replied with a smile that reached my eyes.

Darra held out his hand. I slipped my fingers into his as we ran to his car.

“Just show me the way,” he responded with a wink that made my insides turn to molten liquid.

It was like the old days of celebrating Valentine’s Day where the women would write their names on slips of papers, which would be drawn at random by young men. The two would be paired for the rest of the evening. I just happened to be paired to a hunk of a man. I wondered where this chance pairing would take us. Suddenly my day got much, much better.

That’s it for me today. I hope you enjoyed a little respite. Now continue on the hop to read the incredible Brenda Margriet’s flash fiction. Until next time!
