Romance Writers Weekly ~ Chemistry

Hello and welcome to the blog hop! I hope everyone enjoyed their three day weekend. I felt like we sure needed it! It was nice to get some rest and hang around. The kids got to have some friends over, so they were happy about that. We also got out for a 5 mile hike yesterday and I’m so proud my 5 year old didn’t complain once, she made it through the whole thing. The only reason why my son didn’t complain was because he invited a friend to come with us. They didn’t stop talking for the whole 2 hours!

Today we are asked how do you create chemistry between characters?

Well I always think an enemies to lovers is the best kind of romance. I feel like they already have some sort of connection, then you just have to build the chemistry around them.

There has to be some kind of thread that ties the two characters together. Whether they hate each other or they secretly love one another, or someone likes the other character way more, a person in distress, an animal or friend… There are so many ways to create chemistry between two characters.

I like to focus on developing well rounded characters with distinct personalities, then place them in situations where they can interact with subtle tension, shared vulnerabilities, playful banter and moments of connection. It allows my characters and their unique traits to complement and sometimes clash with each other and build that romantic connection.

Well that’s it for me today, now continue on the hop to see how the incredible PG Forte creates chemistry between her characters. Until next time!

Jocelyn Barnes couldn’t wait to leave Heartwood in her rearview mirror—even though it meant breaking two hearts in the process. Now, with her career on hiatus and her great-aunt in need of help as she recovers from concussion, Jo finds herself right back where she started, older but not much wiser, and about to make all the same mistakes all over again. Carter Donahue doesn’t believe in looking back. As the chef/manager of his family’s new farm-to-table restaurant, he’s got his hands full. With a goal of turning his legacy into a must-see, Hill Country destination, his focus is on the future. The past? He’d rather that stayed buried. The last thing he needs (or wants) is to dig up those old feelings or fall back in love with his ex—especially when she’s already got one foot out the door. Again.
