Romance Writers Weekly – Flash Fiction (Off the Beaten Path)

Welcome to the blog hop! If you missed what the wonderful A.S. Fenichel had to say, just click and pop back.

Today I’ve provided the topic for my fellow writers: Write a flash fiction in 500 words or less that includes the words: sunscreen, camera, tourist.

The summer sun warmed her skin as she lay on the private beach. Waves breaking on the sand was the only sound Tamora heard. After the week from hell, this is what she deserved. Tamora sat up on the lounge chair and stared into the ocean. The blue green waves churned ferociously as the white foam sprayed the sand.

She reached for her Nikon camera and turned the lens so the waves came into focus. The shutter clicked. Tamora glanced at the photo and her lips tilted up. It would be a perfect picture for her new apartment. Her smile faded as she thought of the life she would have to go back to. Why should she return? There was nothing there for her.

Tamora stood and walked toward the water. The warm gritty sand and the cool ocean water played with her senses. She rolled her shoulders away and back to release the tension hidden in them. Tamora closed her eyes and reveled in quiet. She had been lucky to find this beach. Tourists swarmed every other beach she’d stopped at. Of course she had walked off the beaten path, but no one was around to tell her she couldn’t be here.

Tamora scuffed her feet in the sand, then turned and went to her chair. As she sat, thoughts of Gabriel flooded into her mind. Damn! Why did he follow her here too? She wanted to be rid of him. He’d made it perfectly clear he no longer loved her, so he’d moved onto the newer model. Hah, try a woman half his age, not even a woman in Tamora’s mind.

He’d called her old and unadventurous. She’d only been that way because of working her ass off to get the job she’d always wanted. What was wrong with following her dreams? Fate however, threw her out of the loop. Tamora didn’t get the job and she’d lost Gabriel. So she took her savings and left.

No! She refused to think of him here. Tamora didn’t want her paradise destroyed. What she needed was to let her mind drift free and not think of him at all. How could anything be ruined when she stared out into the beautiful mediterranean? As the waves crashed in front her, she felt a rush of exhilaration.

Tamora glanced around the secluded beach once more, no one in sight. Emboldened she lay on her stomach and untied the bikini string at her back and rested her head upon her arms. Who could call her boring now? She would have to put on sunscreen soon, but for the moment she let herself relax.

“Hey!”

Tamora swam up from her dreams as the deep masculine voice called again.

“You can’t be here. This is a private beach!”

Tamora sat up and stared at the greek god in front of her. His skin was sun kissed bronze. Wavy dark hair curled in front of his eyes. Eyes as blue as the mediterranean.

He smiled boldly, his gaze taking in every inch of her.

“I’m Tamora,” she said breathily.

“Pleased to meet you, beautiful Tamora. I’m Damon.”

Her insides melted. She had just found her new adventure.

Well that’s it for me today. I hope you enjoyed this flash fiction! Now continue on the hop and read the incredible Leslie Hachtel’s flash fiction. Until next time!
